The Madonna of Varallo

Oil on canvas with painted frame
43 x 43 cm
2026

This piece is based off of the concept of an ex-voto, these are near death experiences which people credit the Madonna for saving them from. I was first drawn to this when i visited the sanctuary of Varallo near to where my parents are from in Italy - in there i saw the walls of the chapel plastered with photos, drawings and objects spanning from the 18th century to the present day. I've been drawn to these stories for a while, these moments of chance where a person’s life could change drastically. I can understand the desire to accredit your survival to the Madonna, it’s a comfort and an assurance to think that you were never going to die, the Madonna of Varallo always planned for you to survive, so don’t think about it. Consequently, the Chapel of the Madonna of Varallo has become a physical hard drive of people of the surrounding areas stories, stories that would be lost to time if they were not preserved in the chapel.
